Why painting is different in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh is an old, brick, hillside city. Most of its houses were built before 1940, with plaster walls, heavy wood trim, wood windows and covered porches. Frame houses often have aluminum siding over the original clapboard. Lots are steep, so a house can be two stories at the front and four at the back, and side yards are narrow.
The weather adds to it. A normal year brings about 40 inches of precipitation and about 44 inches of snow, with humid summers and many swings above and below freezing in winter. Wood stays damp and paint on porches, sills and trim fails first. Because so many homes predate 1978, lead-safe work practices matter on older paint. In the city's historic districts, exterior painting needs a Certificate of Appropriateness.
How we work
It starts with a free estimate. We walk the job, measure, and look at the surfaces and the prep they need. You get a written quote that lists the prep, the paint and the price. Before painting we cover floors and furniture, then patch, sand, caulk and prime. Two coats go on, and we clean up and walk the finished job with you. Most interior rooms take 1 to 2 days. A full exterior usually takes 3 to 5 days, depending on weather.
